Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent rodents and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that your doors will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at tracking down those issues. We can offer a repair product designed for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
