Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the windows or doors will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at noticing those issues. We can utilize a repair product designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
