Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent critters and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at noticing those problems. We can utilize a repair product that is for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
