Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For many years, they were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop pests and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to lift sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down those problems. We can implement a repair product designed for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a settling foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
