Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent critters and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as stair-step cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows or doors will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at evaluating those problems. We can utilize a repair solution designed for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a uneven foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
