Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, these were built with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of floor jacks to repair sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that your doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at evaluating those problems. We can utilize a repair product designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a sinking foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
