Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent rodents and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the home itself but it also is the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at evaluating these issues. We can implement a repair product designed for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sinking foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
