Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were built with vents which was intended to increase air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent bugs and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only holds the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors or windows will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at evaluating these problems. We can offer a repair product designed for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sloping foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
