Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, they were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves as stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at noticing those problems. We can offer a repair product that is for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a sloping foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
