Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For many years, these were created with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from settling in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at tracking down these problems. We can utilize a repair product intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
