Crawl Space Solutions
In Virginia Beach, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, normally they will show themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows and doors will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down these problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a settling foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
