Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, these were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at spotting these issues. We can offer a repair product that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a sinking foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
