Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were created with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop rodents and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at spotting these issues. We can implement a repair solution intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a sloping foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
