Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop rodents and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a series of floor jacks to repair sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at noticing these issues. We can utilize a repair solution that is for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a sloping foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
