Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were created with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can seal the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop critters and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to level sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at noticing those issues. We can offer a repair product designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a uneven foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
