Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, they were created with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also stop critters and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the building itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at evaluating those problems. We can utilize a repair solution designed for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a settling foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
