Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were created with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop rodents and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if you need it we can install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as stair stepping cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at evaluating these problems. We can utilize a repair solution designed for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a uneven foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
