Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop critters and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as stair-step cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down those problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a sloping foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
