Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a series of floor jacks to lift sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at tracking down those issues. We can implement a repair product that is for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a settling foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
