Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For a long time, these were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the doors and windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at evaluating these issues. We can offer a repair product that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sinking foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
