Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at evaluating these problems. We can offer a repair solution that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a settling foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
