Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, they were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent pests and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to level sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at noticing those issues. We can utilize a repair product intended for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
