Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the proper way to seal them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop critters and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to level sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that the doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem serious at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at noticing those issues. We can utilize a repair product designed for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sloping foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
