Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, these were built with vents which was intended to increase air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from settling in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to lift sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at evaluating those issues. We can utilize a repair product designed for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
