Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, these were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop bugs and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as stair stepping cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your windows or doors will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at noticing these issues. We can implement a repair solution designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sloping foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
