Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we can install a system of floor jacks to lift sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also is the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as diagonal cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows and doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at evaluating those issues. We can offer a repair solution designed for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a settling foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
