Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For a long time, these were built with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can seal the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop rodents and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we can install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at noticing these problems. We can utilize a repair solution intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sloping foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
