Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, they were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. This will also stop critters and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors or windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at evaluating those problems. We can utilize a repair solution designed for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a settling foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
