Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been dealing with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at tracking down these problems. We can offer a repair product designed for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a settling foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
