Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, these were built with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
We have been encapsulating crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent critters and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to lift sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at tracking down these problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a settling foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
