Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For many years, they were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors and windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at noticing those issues. We can utilize a repair product designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a uneven foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
