Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop rodents and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will show themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at spotting these issues. We can implement a repair solution intended for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a sinking foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
