Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, they were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent pests and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the home itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves as stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at noticing those issues. We can implement a repair solution intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sloping foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
