Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop pests and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at tracking down these issues. We can implement a repair product designed for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a uneven foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
