Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop bugs and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at spotting these problems. We can utilize a repair product intended for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a settling foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
