Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. This will also stop critters and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at noticing these issues. We can implement a repair solution that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a settling foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
