Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were built with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at noticing those issues. We can utilize a repair product that is for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sloping foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
