Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces and not basements. For a long time, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can seal the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is protected, if you need it we can install a system of floor jacks to lift sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, normally they will present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at evaluating these issues. We can utilize a repair product intended for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a uneven foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
