Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, these were constructed with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
Our team has been working on crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent critters and animals from settling in the crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at spotting those problems. We can utilize a repair product intended for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
