Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, these were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to repair sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves as stair stepping cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at tracking down these problems. We can utilize a repair product intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sinking foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
