Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For a long time, these were built with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a system of floor jacks to repair sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of the most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at tracking down these problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a uneven foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
