Crawl Space Solutions
In Hampton Roads, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For many years, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can seal the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors and windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at tracking down these issues. We can implement a repair product that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a uneven foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
