Crawl Space Solutions
In Hampton Roads, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop pests and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, normally they will show themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your windows or doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down these problems. We can offer a repair solution that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
