Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For a long time, these were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the proper way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop pests and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors and windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at tracking down those problems. We can offer a repair solution designed for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a settling foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
