Crawl Space Solutions
In Hampton Roads, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, these were built with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working with crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent bugs and animals from settling in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also is the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down those issues. We can implement a repair product that is for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sloping foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
