Crawl Space Solutions
In Hampton Roads, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to repair sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will present themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows or doors will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at tracking down these problems. We can utilize a repair solution that is for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
