Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For a long time, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. This will also stop rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as stair-step cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down those issues. We can implement a repair solution designed for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sloping foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
