Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For a long time, these were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent critters and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of floor jacks to lift sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the building itself but it also is the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows and doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at noticing these problems. We can implement a repair solution designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
