Crawl Space Solutions
In Hampton Roads, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop critters and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to repair sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors and windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at noticing these problems. We can implement a repair solution that is for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a uneven foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
