Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, these were built with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent critters and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as stair stepping cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors or windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at tracking down those issues. We can offer a repair solution that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sloping foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
