Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, these were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent pests and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at tracking down these issues. We can implement a repair product intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
