Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also stop critters and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to level sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will present themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors or windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at tracking down these issues. We can implement a repair product that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a settling foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
