Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop rodents and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only holds the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at noticing these issues. We can implement a repair solution that is for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
