Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, these were created with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also stop rodents and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to level sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as stair-step cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem critical at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at noticing these issues. We can offer a repair solution designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a settling foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
