Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were created with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will seal the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to level sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows and doors will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at evaluating those issues. We can implement a repair product designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a sloping foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
