Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were created with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to level sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, normally they will present themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that your windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at evaluating these issues. We can offer a repair solution designed for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
