Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, these were constructed with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. This will also prevent pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to repair sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the building itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, normally they will show themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at noticing those issues. We can implement a repair solution that is for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a uneven foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
