Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop rodents and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if you need it we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to lift sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, normally they will present themselves as diagonal cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at evaluating these issues. We can offer a repair solution that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a settling foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
