Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For a long time, these were constructed with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop critters and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem serious at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at evaluating those problems. We can implement a repair product that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a uneven foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
