Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control high humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will present themselves as stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that the doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at noticing these issues. We can implement a repair product that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a sinking foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
