Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, these were created with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors or windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at evaluating these problems. We can implement a repair product designed for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a sinking foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
