Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces and not basements. For a long time, these were constructed with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the proper way to seal them off and control high humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent pests and animals from settling in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of floor jacks to lift sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will show themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at spotting these problems. We can implement a repair product designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a sloping foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
