Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For many years, these were created with vents which was intended to increase air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low can increase the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also stop critters and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as stair-step cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors and windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at spotting those problems. We can utilize a repair product designed for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a settling foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
