Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, they were built with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves as diagonal cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our experts are very good at tracking down those problems. We can offer a repair product that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a sloping foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
