Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, they were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop pests and animals from settling in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as stair-step cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that the doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at tracking down these problems. We can offer a repair solution designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a sinking foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
