Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For a long time, these were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working on crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. This will also prevent rodents and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors and windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at spotting these problems. We can utilize a repair product intended for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
