In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were created with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew.
