Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also stop pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a series of floor jacks to lift sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves as stair stepping cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows and doors will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at spotting those issues. We can implement a repair solution intended for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
