Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent pests and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at spotting those problems. We can implement a repair solution intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
