Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, they were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the elements and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at noticing those issues. We can utilize a repair solution intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sloping foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
