Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For many years, they were created with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to repair sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as stair stepping cracks in your brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows and doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem serious at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at spotting those problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a settling foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
