Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if you need it we can install a system of floor jacks to repair sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at evaluating these problems. We can utilize a repair product intended for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a sinking foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
