Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For a long time, they were built with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop critters and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we can install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of the most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as stair-step cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at tracking down those issues. We can utilize a repair product that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
