Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces and not basements. For a long time, they were built with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
Our team has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from settling in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at tracking down these issues. We can utilize a repair product designed for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
