Crawl Space Solutions
In Fort Monroe, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For many years, these were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to lift sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, usually, they will show themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at evaluating these problems. We can utilize a repair product designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a sloping foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
