Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas and not basements. For a long time, they were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop pests and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at spotting these issues. We can utilize a repair product designed for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a settling foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
