Crawl Space Solutions
In Fort Monroe, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas and not basements. For a long time, these were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop critters and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to lift sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at noticing those problems. We can offer a repair solution intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a uneven foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
