Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to lift sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at noticing those problems. We can utilize a repair product that is for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a sinking foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
