In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, they were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
