Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For many years, these were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent pests and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a series of floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors or windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at noticing these problems. We can utilize a repair solution intended for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
