Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent bugs and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to level sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors and windows will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at noticing those problems. We can utilize a repair product designed for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
