Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, these were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to lift sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows and doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at spotting those issues. We can utilize a repair product designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a sloping foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
