Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. This will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our experts are very good at noticing those problems. We can utilize a repair product designed for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a settling foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
