Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, these were built with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
Our team has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to seal them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can close off the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. This will also prevent pests and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to lift sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as diagonal cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that your doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at evaluating those issues. We can offer a repair solution designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If there is a settling foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
