Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and controlling excess humidity can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop rodents and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a series of floor jacks to level sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems and determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at evaluating those problems. We can implement a repair product that is for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a sinking foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
