Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For a long time, they were built with vents which was intended to increase air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to repair sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only holds the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves in the form of stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at evaluating these issues. We can implement a repair product designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a settling foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
