Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, they were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can close off the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop critters and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we can install a system of floor jacks to lift sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will present themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at tracking down these issues. We can offer a repair solution designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a settling foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
