Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. This will also stop critters and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a series of floor jacks to lift sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as diagonal cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the doors will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at tracking down those problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If there is a sloping foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
