Crawl Space Solutions
In Chesapeake, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were created with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from settling in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at evaluating those issues. We can utilize a repair product intended for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a sloping foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
