Crawl Space Solutions
In Chesapeake, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were created with vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
Our team has been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a series of floor jacks to lift sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as diagonal cracks in the brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for particular problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at evaluating these issues. We can implement a repair product that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a settling foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
