Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For many years, these were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is closed off, if you need it we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of the most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at noticing those problems. We can utilize a repair product designed for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a uneven foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
