Crawl Space Solutions
In Chesapeake, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were built with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop rodents and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to repair sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves as stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down these issues. We can implement a repair product designed for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a uneven foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
