Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent rodents and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to lift sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at spotting these problems. We can offer a repair solution that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a sinking foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
