Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas in addition to basements. For many years, these were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. This will also stop pests and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we can install a series of floor jacks to repair sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems to determine if a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at noticing these issues. We can utilize a repair solution that is for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a sloping foundation, we can install a series of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
