In our area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually foster the growth of mildew. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop bugs and animals from settling in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a system of floor jacks to level sloping floors above the crawl space.
