Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For many years, these were created with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are heavy duty plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that your doors or windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem serious at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at noticing these problems. We can utilize a repair product that is for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a uneven foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
