Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the outside and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from settling in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a system of floor jacks to repair sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will present themselves as stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the doors and windows will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for particular problems to determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at spotting these problems. We can offer a repair solution that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a settling foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
