Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, these were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to repair sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, normally they will show themselves as stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at noticing those problems. We can implement a repair product that is for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a sinking foundation, we can install a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
