Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, these were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and keeping the humidity levels low can improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working on crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that can seal the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is closed off, if you need it we can install a system of floor jacks to stabilize sagging floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, normally they will manifest themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem critical at first, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at spotting these issues. We can implement a repair solution intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you have a uneven foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
