Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to seal them off and control high humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a series of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of the most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, normally they will present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows or doors will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at noticing these issues. We can offer a repair solution designed for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a settling foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
