Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were constructed with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and then it never leaves which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to seal them off and control high humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop pests and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a system of floor jacks to lift sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, usually, they will manifest themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows or doors will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems and determine if a repair needs to be installed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at evaluating these problems. We can implement a repair solution that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If you've got a settling foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
