Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For a long time, they were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control excess humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can close off the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is protected, if necessary we can install a system of sagging floor jacks to stabilize sloping floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the home itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as stair-step cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
It is good that many foundation problems have very similar causes and our experts are very good at tracking down these problems. We can implement a repair product designed for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a uneven foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
