Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas instead of basements. For a long time, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the proper way to close them off and control high humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a heavy duty liner, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After your crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a system of floor jacks to lift sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The homes foundation is quite possibly one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the building itself but it also is the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, they will generally present themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in your brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that your windows and doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical at first, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at spotting those problems. We can utilize a repair product designed for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a sinking foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. We will install either push piers or helical piers, depending on where and how bad the sinking is. Both types are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
