Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, there are many homes that are built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, they were constructed with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been enclosing crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the most efficient way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop pests and animals from getting in the crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to repair sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the brickwork, cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the windows and doors will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine if a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at noticing these issues. We can utilize a repair solution that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
