Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas and not basements. For a long time, these were created with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been working with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will seal the area completely and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent rodents and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also is the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, they will generally show themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the doors or windows will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem serious when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and it is important to have an expert evaluate the foundation for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at tracking down these problems. We can offer a repair solution intended for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a settling foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
