Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For a long time, these were built with vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to half of the air in your home comes up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been helping customers with their crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the best way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also stop rodents and animals from getting in the crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to level sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will show themselves in the form of diagonal cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or along the basement walls. You may also notice that the windows or doors will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem serious when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our team is very good at evaluating those issues. We can utilize a repair solution that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a sloping foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
