Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, they were created with open vents which was intended to increase air flow through the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can harbor the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to half of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
We have been working on crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the proper way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, and are strong plastic and vinyl sheets as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will seal the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent critters and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any equipment there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to lift sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you have any foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as stair stepping cracks in the outside brickwork, cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems are caused by similar things and our team is very good at evaluating those problems. We can implement a repair solution that is for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a settling foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
