Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. For many years, these were created with open vents which was intended to increase air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring this area is protected from the weather and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
We have been helping customers with their crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the best way to close them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that can seal the area totally and stop any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop bugs and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we can install a series of sagging floor jacks to level sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
The foundation of your home is easily one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally show themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your windows or doors will get stuck or even cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for specific problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
It is good that the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our professionals are very good at noticing these problems. We can utilize a repair product that is for your particular problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a sinking foundation, we can implement a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
