Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl space areas and not basements. For many years, these were built with open vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. Having open vents allows water to get in when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which results in the humidity level staying too high which can foster the growth of mildew. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the outside and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to seal them off and control high humidity. We do this using a method known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a heavy duty door that will close off the area completely and stop any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also stop pests and animals from getting in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also forms the basement walls. When there are foundation problems, normally they will present themselves as stair stepping cracks in the brickwork, long cracks that run along the foundation or across the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that the windows and doors will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at evaluating those issues. We can implement a repair product intended for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a uneven foundation, we will implement a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
