Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that are built with crawl space areas instead of basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were built with vents which was intended to increase fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, this is rarely what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can foster the growth of mildew. We have found that up to ½ of the air in your home can come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the weather and controlling excess humidity will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a sturdy door that will close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. This will also prevent critters and animals from getting in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once the crawl space is protected, if you need it we will install a system of floor jacks to level sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only holds the structure itself but it also is the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or across basement walls. You may also notice that the windows will not open or close easily or even cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem critical when you notice them, they are all indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for specific problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems stem from similar issues and our professionals are very good at evaluating these problems. We can offer a repair solution intended for your specific issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a uneven foundation, we will implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. Depending on how bad it is and where it is, we will use either helical piers or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
