Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, there are many homes that were built with crawl spaces in addition to basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, they were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the area and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space when it rains or snows and then it never leaves which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually harbor the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will improve the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces since we opened our doors and we know the proper way to seal them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent pests and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any appliances there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is protected, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to repair sinking floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. When you've got foundation problems, normally they will present themselves in the form of stair-step cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run along the foundation or along basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors and windows will not open or close easily or there may be cracks at the corners of them. While these problems may not seem critical at first, each of them are indicative of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for particular problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at tracking down those problems. We can offer a repair product designed for your specific problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a settling foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and can help stabilize your foundation.
