Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes were built with crawl spaces instead of basements. For many years, these were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help fresh air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to enter the space during rain and snow storms and the vents prevent proper evaporation which results in the humidity level staying too high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to ½ of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so ensuring the crawl space is closed off from the elements and controlling excess humidity can increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the proper way to close them off and control the humidity. We do this using a process called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, which are sturdy plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that can close off the area completely and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in your crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. After the crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we can install a system of floor jacks to level sloping floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your foundation is easily one of the most important areas of the home. It not only supports the structure itself but it also creates the basement walls. If you've got foundation problems, usually, they will present themselves as stair-step cracks in the outside brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or along basement walls. You may also notice that the doors and windows will get stuck or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these issues seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems to determine what type of a repair needs to be installed.
It is good that many foundation problems are caused by similar things and our professionals are very good at spotting these problems. We can implement a repair product intended for your exact issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you've got a settling foundation, we can implement a system of foundation piers to stabilize the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
