Crawl Space Solutions
In our area, there are many homes that were built with crawl space areas and not basements. As long as there have been crawl spaces, these were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow into the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. The vents allow water to get in during rain and snow storms and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which can harbor the growth of mildew. We have found that up to 50% of the air in your home enters through the crawl space so having the space protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been encapsulating crawl spaces as long as we have been in business and we know the best way to close them off and control the humidity. This is done using a method called encapsulation which is the installation of a series of vapor barriers, sometimes accompanied by insulation products, and are thick plastic and vinyl sheeting as well as covers to close off existing vents and a heavy duty door that will close off the area totally and prevent any unwanted moisture from entering. Closing the area will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in your crawl space which will help keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if you need it we will install a system of sagging floor jacks to repair sagging floors above the crawl space.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important parts. It not only supports the building itself but it also forms the basement walls. If you have any foundation problems, they will generally manifest themselves as stair-step cracks in your brickwork, horizontal cracks that run the length of the foundation or across the basement walls. You may also notice that your doors and windows will stick when you open or close them or even cracks at the corners of them. While these issues may not seem problematic when you notice them, each of them are indicators of a sinking or settling foundation and they should be evaluated by an expert for problems and determine if a repair needs to be performed.
Thankfully, many foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at noticing these problems. We can utilize a repair product that is for your exact problem to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation. If the problem is a sloping foundation, we will install a system of foundation piers to correct the problem. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types are very strong and can stabilize your foundation.
