Crawl Space Solutions
In the greater Virginia Beach area, many of the homes are built with crawl spaces and not basements. For many years, they were constructed with open vents to the outside where were intended to help air flow through the space and keep it dry. Unfortunately, the opposite is usually what happens. Having open vents allows water to enter the space when it rains or snows and the vents hinder airflow which causes the humidity levels to stay high which will eventually facilitate the growth of mildew. Up to 50% of the air in your home has come up through the crawl space so having the space protected from the elements and keeping the humidity levels low will increase the overall air quality in your home.
JB Design has been dealing with crawl spaces since 1995 and we know the most efficient way to seal them off and control excess humidity. This is done using a process known as encapsulation which is the installation of a thick liner or vapor barrier, occasionally installed with insulation products, which are thick plastic and vinyl sheets as well as vent covers and a sturdy door that will close off the area totally and prevent any excess moisture from entering. Encapsulation will also prevent bugs and animals from moving in the crawl space which will keep any items there safe and allow you to use it for storage. Once your crawl space is encapsulated, if necessary we will install a series of floor jacks to stabilize sinking floors in your home.
Structural Foundation Repair
Your homes foundation is quite possibly one of, if not the, most important areas of the home. It not only supports the home itself but it also forms the basement walls. If there are foundation problems, they will generally present themselves as diagonal cracks in your outside brickwork, long cracks that run the length of the foundation or along the basement walls. Sometimes, you will see that your doors will stick when you open or close them or there may be cracks at the corners of them. You may not think these problems seem problematic at first, they are all indicators of a sinking or settling foundation which should be looked at by a professional for problems and determine what type of a repair needs to be in place.
Thankfully, the most common foundation problems have very similar causes and our team is very good at spotting those problems. We can implement a repair solution designed for your particular issue to permanently repair and stabilize the foundation or walls. If you have a uneven foundation, we will install a series of foundation piers to level the foundation. The location and amount of sinking will determine if we use helical or push piers. Both types of piers are very strong and are able to stabilize your foundation.
